Superman Returns with Brandon Routh set to reprise role for Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths

July 20, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Some thirteen years after donning the tights for Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, Brandon Routh is set to reprise the role of the Man of Steel for this year’s Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths.

According to Deadline, Routh – who plays Ray Palmer/The Atom on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (which is part of the ambitious crossover alongside Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Batwoman) – will portray a Superman from “a different time frame”, taking on double duty alongside his regular role as Ray. He won’t be the only Clark Kent in the crossover either, as Tyler Hoechlin will also be appearing as Kal-El, reprising his role from Supergirl and last year’s Arrowverse crossover Elseworlds.

UPDATE: After Deadline broke the story, w caught up with Routh at Comic-Con, who confirmed that he will be donning the tights once again:

“It’s an opportunity for me to kind of say hello and goodbye to the character in a way I didn’t get to the first time,” said Routh. “Being a young individual of 24, 25, I thought, ‘Oh, I’m going to do this for years and make multiple movies.’ And that of course didn’t happen. I’m just very honored to be able to do this one last time.”

Inspired by the classic DC comic book event Crisis on Infinite Earths, this year’s incarnation of the annual Arrowverse crossover will consist of five parts, with the first three airing in December and the remaining two arriving in January following a winter break. Given that the original story essentially reset DC comic book mythology back in the 1980s, the TV adaptation will likely have some serious ramifications for the Arrowverse moving forward.
