Jon Favreau says The Mandalorian will explore “the Mad Max aspect of Star Wars”

August 22, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

With a first trailer reportedly set to arrive tomorrow during Disney’s D23 Expo, The Mandalorian creator and showrunner Jon Favreau has been chatting about the live-action Star Wars television series, stating that it will explore “the darker, freakier” side of the galaxy far, far away.

“There’s a certain look that the Mandalorian lead character has, there’s a size that the spaceship is, there’s a scale that lines up with the original trilogy,” said Favreau in an interview with THR. “I’m trying to evoke the aesthetics of not just the original trilogy [and] not just the first film, but the first act of the first film. What was it like on Tatooine? What was going on in that cantina? That has fascinated me since I was a child, and I love the idea of the darker, freakier side of Star Wars, the Mad Max aspect of Star Wars.”

As for what appealed to him about creating a Star Wars TV series rather than a movie, Favreau responded that “there’s an opportunity to tell a story that’s bigger than television, but you don’t have the same expectations that a big holiday release has, which to me isn’t that type of Star Wars that comes out of me. The type of Star Wars that I’m inspired to tell is a smaller thing with new characters.”

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The Mandalorian sees Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) leading a cast that includes Gina Carano (Deadpool), Carl Weathers (Rocky), Nick Nolte (Afflication), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man). It is set to premiere on Disney+ on November 12th 2019.
