George Lucas talked with J.J. Abrams about Midi-chlorians ahead of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

November 14, 2019 by Samuel Brace

J.J. Abrams has revealed that George Lucas spoke with him about Midi-chlorians ahead of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

December’s release date for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is fast approaching, with fans speculating about what they might see in the new film. Is it possible that Midi-chlorians get a mention?

Midi-chlorians, the organisms that allow people to use the Force, were introduced in the Prequel Trilogy by George Lucas. Now J.J. Abrams has revealed to Total Film (via Games Radar) that Lucas has spoken to him about the subject before starting work on Episode IX:

“Yes, there were some conversations about Midi-chlorians – he loves his Midi-chlorians. But it was a very helpful thing. Sitting with him is a treat, just to hear him talk, because it’s fucking George Lucas talking about Star Wars. I always feel it’s a gift to hear him talk about that stuff. Because the effect that he had on me at 10 years old is utterly profound.”

Whatever happens in Episode IX, it’s nice to hear that Lucas is still bending the ear of filmmakers in the Star Wars universe. We will have to wait and see if Midi-chlorians get a mention, however, when The Rise of Skywalker opens this December.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 19th 2019 in the UK and December 20th 2019 in North America. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
