Back in May of last year it was revealed that Universal Pictures was looking to put together a new adaptation of H. G. Bissinger’s 1990 book Friday Night Lights, and now comes word from Variety that filmmaker John Erick and Drew Dowdle – a.k.a. the Dowdle Brothers – have boarded the project.
According to the site, Elrick is set to direct with Dowdle executive producing, and both will do a rewrite of the script, which has previously been written by Robert Schenkkan, Josh Parkinson & David Gordon Green (the latter was originally earmarked to direct, only for scheduling issues with the Halloween sequels Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends).

The new film will have no connection to the 2004 movie starring Billy Bob Thornton, or the hit TV series from NBC, and is instead “a new story with a completely different setting and cast of characters, while still following the world of high school football in Texas and the impact it has on the community.
