Jumanji: The Next Level exceeds expectations with box office opening, pushes global haul to $213 million

December 15, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Two years ago, Sony scored a huge success with its franchise reboot Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the film holding its own against Star Wars: The Last Jedi as it became one of the studio’s highest ever earners with $962 million worldwide, and now it looks as though its sequel could follow suit.

After debuting in several international markets last weekend, Jumanji: The Next Level expanded another 35 markets this time around, topping the box office domestically with $60.1 million (up considerably on Welcome to the Jungle’s $52 million five-day opening in 2017) and adding a further $152.5 million from 52 overseas markets including the UK ($12.6 million), Russia ($8.9 million) and Mexico ($4.8 million).

So far, The Next Level has amassed $213 million worldwide, and while it is exceeding expectations it faces a big test this coming week as Disney unleashed the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.

Jumanji: The Next Level is being directed by Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and will see the return of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Nick Jonas alongside newcomers Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians), Danny DeVito (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon).
