Dennis Haysbert to play God in Lucifer’s final season

January 7, 2020 by Ricky Church

Lucifer‘s final season is set to see a long-awaited family reunion as Entertainment Weekly has announced Dennis Haysbert (24) is set to portray God, Lucifer’s estranged father.

Throughout Lucifer, God has often been mentioned by both Lucifer and his brother Amenadiel, played by Tom Ellis and D.B. Woodside respectively, and has manipulated certain people into Lucifer’s life, but has never yet been seen on the show.

Funny enough, Haysbert and Woodside have previously worked together through 24 as presidential brothers David and Wayne Palmer. It turns out Woodside played a significant part in gaining Haysbert for the series’ final season in one of the most mysterious roles on the show.

“We did like the big crazy list of possible actors for the part and he was my top choice,” Lucifer co-showrunner Joe Henderson told EW. “We were lucky. It was our first and only offer. D.B. had actually come up to us and said, ‘Have you thought about Dennis?’ We were like, ‘Do you think he’d actually do it?’ And he’s like, ‘Well, I’ve already talked to him and sort of brought it up.’ And so we just went straight on at him.”

“Every time I see D.B., there’s always this fondness and this connection. We worked on a show that was arguably one of the best shows ever produced in television, so you’re going to have a kind of camaraderie,” said Haysbert. “I don’t know how I went from brother to father. We’re celestial. We can do that.”

Based loosely off the comics by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg, the series follows Lucifer Morningstar aka the Devil (Tom Ellis), who abandons Hell for a vacation in Los Angeles where he opens up his own nightclub and solves crimes for the LAPD alongside Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German). The show also features Kevin Alejandro as Detective Daniel “Dan” Espinoza, D. B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen and Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin.

Lucifer‘s fifth and final season will be split into two parts and will begin airing on Netflix later this year.
