David Lynch has “zero interest” in the new Dune after his experience on the 1984 film

April 22, 2020 by Liam Waddington

While the upcoming adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune from director Denis Villeneuve is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2020, former Dune director David Lynch will not be checking out the film.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lynch revealed he has “zero interest” in the latest adaptation of Dune due to his prior frustrations during production on his 1984 version.

“I have zero interest in Dune,” Lynch said. “Because it was a heartache for me. It was a failure and I didn’t have final cut. I’ve told this story a billion times. It’s not the film I wanted to make. I like certain parts of it very much — but it was a total failure for me.”

It is no surprise that Lynch still has strong negative feelings towards the 1984 adaptation after his attempt at bring the book to life was met with disappointing results from audiences and critics alike after the studio was largely involved and ultimately denied him the final cut of the film.

While Lynch has no interest in the new film, it seems he may be in the minority on this one, and even his Paul Atreides, actor Kyle MacLachlan, has recently stated that he’s “very excited to see” the new adaptation.

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

Dune is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) and sees Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) leading the cast alongside Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Dave Bautista (Avengers: Infinity War), Stellan Skarsgard (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Charlotte Rampling (Red Sparrow), Zendaya (Spider-Man: Far From Home), Javier Bardem (Loving Pablo), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Sex Education), and Chang Chen (The Assassin).

Dune is currently set to release in theatres on December 18th 2020.
