Sam Mendes suggests that he’s finished with Bond after Spectre

November 8, 2015 by Gary Collinson

In the run up to the release of Spectre, there’s been a tonne of speculation as to whether Daniel Craig will return for another outing as Bond, or hand in his licence to kill and make way for a new actor in the role of 007. Craig has recently suggested that he could be back for another outing, but it seems that Skyfall and Spectre helmer Sam Mendes has decided to call it a day on the franchise.

“There’s a sense of completeness [with Spectre] that wasn’t there at the end of Skyfall,” Mendes told Deadline. “That’s what makes this feel different. It feels like there’s a rightness to it, that I have finished a journey.”

Asked about the future of the series, Mendes replied that: “You cast a new actor and find a new director, and make something totally new. I can, off the top of my head, give you three or four ideas for where it could go next. They’re all daring and big. To me, the enemy is repetition and laziness, and the great danger is not challenging the preexisting format.”

“These are my two chapters of the Bond myth,” he continued. “Someone else is going to write a chapter or 10 or 50, because Bond is strong enough for that, and because there’s enough to play with. Daniel may absolutely turn around six months’ time and feel his energy renewed. Or he might say just the opposite. If he is as sensible as I think he is, he needs to go away and have some time to think and do another job that’s completely different, which he’s already doing with Othello.”

Spectre sees Sam Mendes (Skyfall) directing Bond veterans Daniel Craig as James Bond, Rory Kinnear as Tanner, Ben Whishaw as Q, Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny, Ralph Fiennes as M and Jesper Christensen as Mr. White, alongside franchise newcomers Andrew Scott (Pride) as Denbigh, Lea Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Colour) as Madeleine Swann, Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Mr. Hinx, Monica Bellucci (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) as Lucia Sciarra, Stephanie Sigman (The Bridge) as Estrella and Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) as Oberhauser.
