James Mangold didn’t expect Fox to let Logan be so tragic

May 29, 2020 by Samuel Brace

James Mangold, the director of Logan, says he didn’t expect Fox to let him make this X-Men film so tragic.

Logan is widely considered to be the best X-Men film so far produced, taking the franchise in a different, darker, more focused direction from the other movies.

The film doesn’t pull any punches and even reveals that Charles accidentally killed the other X-Men apart from Wolverine when he started suffering from dementia. This is something that director James Mangold didn’t expect Fox to let him do.

Sharing on Twitter during a watch party for the film, he said: “I never thought I’d get away w/ the idea Charles had accidentally killed XMEN when he suffered an attack of dementia, yet I felt I need there be a profound tragedy behind them. Grateful 4 the bravery of Fox & audiences for embracing.”

It was certainly a brave decision and shows that Fox was truly willing to take risks with this particular film. Wolverine’s future isn’t likely to look much like Logan, however, now that he is in the MCU but hopefully the stories will be just as engaging.
