Kenneth Branagh isn’t sure if he is playing the villain in Tenet

June 8, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster, Tenet, is still scheduled the release next month and while it is common knowledge the beloved director likes to keep a vast majority of details surrounding his movie a mystery, it appears one of the cast members isn’t quite sure on what label to put on his character.

In a recent interview with Total Film (via SYFY Wire), Kenneth Branagh has claimed he is unsure if he’s playing the villain of the film despite the first two trailers implying otherwise.

“Given the nature of it, as Chris to some extent sort of reinvents the wheel here, a lot of people start engaging with John David Washington’s character in both expected ways…so you might expect me to be an antagonist…but then [the story] doesn’t quite follow what you might expect as the story plays out.”

He added, “I kid you not, I read this screenplay more times than I have ever read any other thing I have ever worked on,” Branagh shared. “It was like doing the Times crossword puzzle every day, I would imagine. Except the film and the screenplay didn’t expect you, or need you, to be an expert.”

Branagh continued to imply that audiences will be left guessing about the identities of the protagonists and antagonists throughout the film.

“In the playing of it, and in the scenes, he keeps up turning, or playing forward and backward, our expectations of what the character should be. So my conversations with [Nolan] about my character were constant because the character’s evolution was not set. It was a series of constant surprises.”

Armed with only one word – Tenet – and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time. Not time travel. Inversion.

Tenet sees Christopher Nolan directing a cast that includes John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.

Tenet is set for release on July 17th 2020.
