David Schwimmer gives an update on the Friends Reunion special

July 21, 2020 by Ricky Church

When HBO Max was preparing to launch one of the first projects to be exclusively on the streaming service was the highly anticipated Friends reunion special. However, with the current health crisis having reached a new peak before the launch HBO was forced to delay filming of the special until such time when it would be safe for its cast, crew and audience.

Now Friends actor David Schwimmer, who portrayed Ross Geller on all 10 season of the hit series, has given an update on when filming the unscripted special might take place.

Speaking with host Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Schwimmer said “It’s supposed to happen maybe in August, the middle of August. But honestly, we’re going to wait and see for another week or two, if we all determine it’s really safe enough to do. And if it’s not, then we’ll wait until it’s safe.”

Contrary to what fans hope, the reunion special won’t be a scripted, brand new episode of Friends that catches audiences up on where the characters are now, but rather an an unscripted special with the cast discussing the impact the series had in pop culture. Schwimmer reiterated this, saying “It’s unscripted, it’s basically a really fun interview and then some other surprise bits.”

Friends ran for 10 seasons with 236 episodes that can be viewed on HBO Max after Warner TV acquired the streaming rights from Netflix.
