James Wan says Aquaman 2 will be “more serious” and “more relevant”

August 24, 2020 by Liam Waddington

During DC FanDome’s Aquaman panel, director James Wan offered some minor details on the direction of the story for the upcoming DC sequel including taking on a “more serious” tone.

“I would say a little bit more serious. A little bit more relevant in a world that we’re living in today. And I think that’s kind of what it wants to go.”

Although Aquaman 2 will take a more serious and grounded tone compared to the original, Wan has also previously confirmed the sequel will continue to incorporate a little of his horror sensibilities from the original.

“Just like the first movie had a touch of my horror sensibility in it, in regards to the Trench sequence, I would say there will be a little bit of that in this next one,” Wan said. “I think it’s something that’s a big part of who I am, and it just naturally comes out in these kinds of films.”

Aquaman 2 is set to be directed by James Wan with returning cast members Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Amber Heard (Mera), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), and Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master). The film is currently scheduled to release in theatres on December 16th, 2022.
