Scarlett Johansson faces off against Taskmaster in new Black Widow image

September 4, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

With less than two months to go until the delayed launch of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Empire has shared a new image from Marvel’s upcoming solo movie Black Widow which sees Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff facing off with the film’s villain, the mysterious Taskmaster.

Meanwhile, speaking to the outlet, Johansson has been discussing Black Widow’s themes and their relevance in today’s world, the star stating that:

“I think this film in particular is very much reflective of what’s going on in regards to the Time’s Up movement and the #MeToo movement. It would be such a miss if we didn’t address that stuff, if this film didn’t take that head-on. I think, particularly for [director Cate Shortland], it was so important for her to make a movie about women who are helping other women, who lift other women up out of a very difficulty situation. Someone asked me if Natasha was a feminist. Of course she is, it’s obvious. It’s kinda an asinine question.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on October 28th in the UK and on November 6th in North America.
