Trick ‘r Treat director Michael Dougherty to helm series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed

October 1, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Clive Barker has revealed in an interview with ComingSoon.net that a series adaptation of his 1990 horror film Nightbreed will be entering production in 2021 and director Micheal Dougherty is on board to direct.

“It’s exciting, after 30 years, to go back to these characters and find out who’s still speaking to me, who wants their story told,” Barker said. “My tongue isn’t in my cheek when I say that as when I start a piece, it’s listening. The writing is a piece of listening, I’ve always said I was a journalist and what I was reporting on was the space between my ears.”

However, there are currently no casting or plot details on the project as Barker also revealed that he is currently hard at work developing the bible of the show’s universe.

The original 1990 film, which is based on Clive Barker’s own novel Cabal, follows Aaron Boone, an unstable mental patient who is falsely led to believe by his doctor that he is a serial killer. Tracked down by the police, his doctor, and his girlfriend Lori, Boone eventually finds refuge in an abandoned cemetery called Midian among a tribe of monsters and outcasts known as the “Nightbreed” where they hide from humanity.

Dougherty, who directed Trick ‘r Treat and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, is also currently working on the HBO series adaptation of Barker’s classic Hellraiser franchise as a writer and producer.
