Kate Mulgrew returning as Captain Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy

October 8, 2020 by Ricky Church

Another familiar captain of the Star Trek franchise will be making their return as Nickelodeon and CBS announced during the Star Trek virtual panel at the New York Comic-Con that Kate Mulgrew will be returning as Captain Kathryn Janeway in the upcoming animated series Star Trek: Prodigy. You can watch the announcement below…

“I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy,” Mulgrew said of her return. “How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.”

Mulgrew portrayed Janeway for all seven season of Star Trek: Voyager and had the distinction of being the franchise’s first female captain to lead a series. She would later cameo in the final Star Trek: The Next Generation film, Star Trek: Nemesis, where it was revealed she was promoted to the rank of admiral.

“Captain Janeway was held to a different standard than her predecessors,” said Prodigy executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “She was asked to embody an inhuman level of perfection in order to be accepted as ‘good enough’ by the doubters, but showed them all what it means to be truly outstanding. We can think of no better captain to inspire the next generation of dreamers on Nickelodeon, than she.”

“Kate’s portrayal of Captain Janeway is truly iconic, and has resonated with a global audience for many years,” said Ramsey Naito, President of Nickelodeon Animation. “We can’t wait to see her bring this character to life in a whole new way, while continuing to be an inspiration for both new and loyal fans.”

Dan and Kevin Hageman (Trollhunters, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) are serving as showrunners on Prodigy, which will follow a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.

Prodigy is the second animated Trek series that fans have to look forward to after CBS All Access’ comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks. It joins an expanding franchise that also includes Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and a Section-31 series starring Michelle Yeoh.

Star Trek: Prodigy will be a CG-animated series aimed at younger fans and will premiere on Nickelodeon in 2021.
