Wonder Woman 1984 delay likely as Illinois theaters shut down again

November 17, 2020 by Robert Kojder

Let’s face it, the possibility of Wonder Woman 1984 actually releasing on Christmas Day has always been up in the air. Most of us are awaiting another inevitable delay rather than actually allowing anticipation to kick in. Although, if the hotly anticipated blockbuster was going to arrive as a Christmas present, it was going to need Chicago theaters open much like Tenet did – except more than ever given UK cinemas have shut down again while LA and New York are showing no signs of opening.

Some news outlets will report that a new wave is on the horizon, but really, this virus never left the US or the UK. Cases are higher than ever, and with that, the state of Illinois has just announced that effective November 20 theaters will be closing down again. In a world where we as a society haven’t been able to course-correct things over seven months, it’s extremely unlikely that the country or Illinois is in a better position to have theaters open again on Christmas Day. It wouldn’t surprise me if Warner Bros. announces a delay by the time I finish writing this.

Recently, Warner Bros. has been rumoured to be exploring two options – releasing Wonder Woman 1984 on their subscription-based service HBO Max or rolling the dice again hoping for a theatrical release next summer. Stay tuned for their official response.

Wonder Woman 1984 reunites Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins with stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Ewen Bremner (Charlie), Said Taghmaoui (Sameer), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe), Doutzen Kroes (Venelia) and new additions Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters) as Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah, Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) as Maxwell Lord, and Natasha Rothwell (Love, Simon), Ravi Patel (Master of None) and Gabriella Wilde (Doctor Who) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
