Men in Black 4 to feature a female lead, door open for Will Smith return

November 26, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Back in September it was announced that Sony plans to “reinvent” the Men in Black franchise with a new trilogy, and producer Laurie MacDonald has revealed that the fourth female in the franchise will feature a prominent female lead.

“There will be a prominent woman in black in the fourth [film],” MacDonald told BBC Newsbeat, with her husband and producing partner Walter Parkes adding that: “We are quite early on in it. We sort of looked at the first three in retrospect as a bit of a trilogy. Now we are looking at a reinvention.”

While the pair had previously suggested Will Smith would be absent from the new trilogy, Parkes teased a potential return for Agent J, stating: “Never count Will out.”

The first Men in Black was released in 1997, with Men in Black II following in 2002 and Men in Black 3 closing out the trilogy in 2012. Collectively, the three films have pulled in over $1.6 billion at the global box office.
