Robert Rodriguez was a last-minute replacement to direct The Mandalorian

December 9, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Robert Rodriguez, the director of The Mandalorian‘s big Boba Fett episode last week, was apparently a last-minute replacement.

The Mandalorian season two just gets better and better. Last week’s episode saw Boba Fett reclaim his armour and team up with Din after Grogu was kidnapped by Moff Gideon and his Dark Troopers.

The episode had a lot of action and director Robert Rodriguez has been highly praised for his work. But the famous filmmaker wasn’t the first choice. Apparently, Jon Favreau called him up when another director dropped out.

Speaking to GamesRadar, Rodriguez said: “I’m friends with Jon Favreau and he needed a last-minute replacement for a director and so I said, ‘Sure, I’ll come play in the Star Wars universe!’ What a dream. And it’s fulfilled all my… it’s beyond my expectations, I mean, it was SO fun, you can’t imagine what it’s like to walk on a set that has the classic look of The Empire Strikes Back feel and look. It’s right after that era, right after the Return of the Jedi. It’s that era. So you really feel like you just walked into your childhood.”

With Rodriguez being a big Star Wars fan, it really was the perfect match and resulted in what many consider to be the show’s best episode so far. Perhaps Rodriguez will be invited back for an instalment next season.

The Mandalorian season two sees the returning Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin), Gina Carano (Cara Dune), Carl Weathers (Greef Karga), Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon), Bill Burr (Mayfield), and Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shand) joined by the likes of Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), Katee Sackhoff (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Michael Biehn (The Terminator), Rosario Dawson (Daredevil), and WWE Superstar Sasha Banks.

The Mandalorian season two airs on Fridays on Disney+.
