Titans casts Savannah Welch as Barbara Gordon for third season

January 19, 2021 by Ricky Church

DC’s Titans will feature another familiar face for comic book fans in its third season as Variety reports the series has cast Savannah Welch (Six) as Barbara Gordon, the former Batgirl and daughter of former Gotham City police commissioner Jim Gordon.

In the third season of Titans, Barbara Gordon has followed in her father’s footsteps to become the new Gotham City Police Commissioner. She uses a wheelchair after her career as Batgirl came to an end when “she was shot and paralyzed by the Joker. She has a combative relationship with Bruce Wayne. Her life gets more complicated when Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) returns to Gotham, rekindling their old romance and starting a new crime fighting partnership.”

In the comics, after Joker’s attack Barbara Gordon continued fighting crime as Oracle, using her computer and high tech skills to help Batman and other heroes of the DC Universe and became one of the main members of the Birds of Prey alongside Black Canary and Huntress. She acted as Oracle for over 20 years until DC rebooted their comics line in 2011 with the New 52 where Barbara regained the use of her legs and became Batgirl once again. In the Batman Beyond animated series, Barbara also followed after her father to become Gotham’s police commissioner in the far future where Bruce Wayne was retired, but training Terry McGinnis as the new Batman.

Welch uses a wheelchair herself after having one of her legs amputated in a 2016 accident. Since her accident, she has become an outspoken supporter for the disabled community and actors.

Titans season 3 features a cast that includes Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Curran Walters as Jason Todd, Minka Kelly as Dove, Alan Ritchson as Hawk, Joshua Orpin as Conner Kent, Damaris Lewis as Blackfire, and Ian Glen as Bruce Wayne.
