Currently on the promotional tour for his new film The Big Short, writer/director Adam McKay has been speaking to Yahoo about the current status of Anchorman 3.
While the idea of a third film was shot down when the long-awaited sequel was released in 2013, it hasn’t stopped McKay and star Will Ferrell kicking around some ideas for a third outing, which could see Ron Burgundy tackle the Iraq War and the rise of the internet:
McKay said: “That was what we kind of talked about. We talked about doing one that was about the rise of the new media. I also thought there was something to the idea — and who knows, maybe we will do one some day — I also thought it’d be cool to have Ron Burgundy get embedded in the Iraq War. We kicked around that idea. But we’ve never got that serious about it, but it would have to be the next stage of what the media has become. And I think you’re right, I think it’s the internet. The only thing is by then Burgundy would be getting pretty old. So maybe it’s a movie we make in 10 years, when Will’s aged up and it actually makes sense that you can set it in 1997 or 98.”
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues grossed around $173 million worldwide, and saw the return of Ferrell, Steve Carell (who co-stars in The Big Short), Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate and David Koechner.
The Big Short starring Carell, Christian Bale (Knight of Cups), Ryan Gosling (Drive) and Brad Pitt (By The Sea) opens December 11th in the US on limited release, and on January 22nd in the UK.
