Rumour: HBO Max developing Batman: The Animated Series revival

January 23, 2021 by Gary Collinson

It’s widely regarded as one of the best animated series of all time – and one of the finest incarnations of its iconic hero – but could Batman: The Animated Series be set for a revival on HBO Max?

Well, that’s the rumour currently doing the rounds, with Batman-News reporting that Kevin Smith and his Fatman Beyond co-host Marc Bernardin discussed that very possibility during a recent episode of the podcast.

“HBO Max is looking at making a Batman: The Animated Series sequel that they want to continue that forward,” said Bernardin, with Smith interjecting that: “I’m not involved, but I too have heard this and I’ve heard this from very reliable people.”

Created by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm and debuting in 1992, Batman: The Animated Series ran for 85 episodes on Fox Kids and introduced the world to Kevin Conroy’s Batman. It launched the DC Animated Universe continuity, which included the likes of Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League and Batman Beyond.

Assuming Warner Bros. can bring back the original cast and creative team, then a Batman: The Animated Series revival would certainly be a big get for HBO Max as the streamer looks to scoop up any DC fans yet to be convinced by an upcoming line-up that includes the DC Universe TV shows Titans, Doom Patrol and Harley Quinn, Zack Snyder’s Justice League and The Suicide Squad , along with the promise of around two new HBO Max exclusive DC movies per year.
