The CW passes on DC series Wonder Girl, but gives pilot order to Naomi

February 14, 2021 by Gary Collinson

With pilot season upon us, it has been announced that The CW has passed on its proposed Wonder Girl series, while granting a pilot order to another potential DC property in Naomi.

Wonder Girl was announced as in development this past November and would have revolved around the character of Yara Flor, the daughter of an Amazonian Warrior and a Brazilian River God, who uses her powers to fight the evil forces that would seek to destroy the world.

Co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez (Queen of the South) announced on Twitter that the network would not be moving forward with the show, which would have marked the first DC TV series to have been led by a Latina superhero character.

So some sad news. For all of those asking, Wonder Girl is not getting picked up at the CW. I was very proud of the script I wrote. Wish I could’ve shared the world I created, but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. Thanks for everyone’s enthusiasm. It meant a lot to me.

Despite passing on Wonder Girl, the network has given a pilot order to Naomi, an adaptation of the comic book of the same name which has been developed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma) alongside Jill Blankenship (Arrow). The official logline reads:

Naomi follows a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.

Naomi isn’t the only potential new DC show still in the pipeline at The CW for next season, as it also has the Black Lightning spinoff Painkiller in the works, with a backdoor pilot set to air as part of Black Lightning’s upcoming fourth and final season.
