Alex Wolff opens up about the “damage” that making Hereditary caused him

July 29, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Working in horror, especially extreme horror, is no easy task. No one understands more than Alex Wolff, who’s starred in various heavy or dark films.

From this year’s Old to cult-favorite My Friend Dahmer, Wolff has put in impressive work in the horror genre. But he’s most known for his role in Ari Aster’s Hereditary, opposite Toni Collette. Though the film was met with massive acclaim and became a cult hit, Alex Wolff looks back on making the film differently.

In a recent interview with Looper, the actor opened up about working on the film and the toll it took. “I’ll tell you that movie did about as much damage to me as a movie can do. It really affected me,” says Wolff.

He continued in the interview, “It’s very hard because as an actor, you really don’t want to sound pretentious or self-serious or like anything is too serious. Because we have a cushy job in a lot of ways, but this, emotionally, it was one of those tough ones, it was one of those ones that really did some gymnastics on my emotional well-being.”

It was refreshing to hear the young actor acknowledge the privilege of being an actor in mainstream film, but that doesn’t take away from the challenging moments in crafting films. Just glad to see Wolff has overcome the heaviness of that film and went on to star in popular movies like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and 2021’s sleeper hit Pig.
