Alex Proyas is developing a Dark City TV series

August 15, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Dark City, released in 1998, is a cult classic sci-fi film that’s had quite the journey. From its initial release that had studio meddling to the 2008 Director’s Cut, the film has overcome a lot but still found a place with fans.

Now, we’ll see the world of Dark City revisited in a brand-new television series being developed by the original creator Alex Proyas. During the Popcorn Frights Film Festival, Proyas debuted a new short film set in the Dark City world. He then held a Q&A with filmmaker Joe Lynch, and teased the future of the franchise.

“Dark City right now is really an intriguing one to me because we’re developing a series, a Dark City Series,” Proyas explained to Lynch. “Which we’re in the very early stages [of], but I’m having to reanalyze in order to construct a new story. I’m having to go back and kind of jog my memory as to what we actually did and what I think worked and what I think didn’t work and reevaluate my own film, so that’s been a very interesting experience as well; which I’ve not done before.”

The original film followed the plot of “a man who struggles with memories of his past, which include a wife he cannot remember and a nightmarish world no one else ever seems to wake up from.” Rufus Sewell starred as our lead John Murdoch and starred alongside the likes of Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, and Richard O’Brien.
