Moon Knight’s Oscar Isaac on why he decided to return for another Marvel project after X-Men: Apocalypse

August 27, 2021 by EJ Moreno

For many, one bad outing in a massive franchise, and they never want to return to that again. Not the case for Oscar Isaac, though. The actor is gearing up to take on the role of Moon Knight, one of Marvel’s most infamous comic characters, and he’s looking to shake off the energy from his previous outing in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Isaac starred in Fox’s 2016 X-Men sequel, playing the titular villain. The film was met with much flack from critics and fans, with Isaac’s character landing most of the heat. However, he’s now landed a starring gig in Marvel’s Moon Knight Disney+ series, and in a new interview with Total Film, the actor has explained why he wanted to return for another comic book project.

“It’s not so much about the genre of things. It’s the people. And is there room to do something interesting in it? And sometimes there is, and you think there will be. And sometimes it turns out there isn’t,” said Isaac. “So with [Moon Knight] – I love the people involved. I thought there was an incredibly unusual story to tell within the world of, you know, the superhero language. But we’re making something that’s quite different, and that doesn’t follow the same… not necessarily even logic of what a lot of superhero films do. I think because of that; I just found an opportunity to do something that I’ve not done at all yet, and to have a lot of creative collaboration with the rest of the people making it.

Moon Knight will see directors Mohamed Diab and duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead helming the series, with Isaac joined in the cast by May Calamawy and Ethan Hawke. On top of gearing up for Moon Knight, Isaac is also starring in the upcoming Dune film, which is set to open in US cinemas and on HBO Max on October 22nd.
