Marvel’s Eternals is the lowest-rated MCU movie on Rotten Tomatoes

October 29, 2021 by Gary Collinson

While our very own Robert Kojder and EJ Moreno both found much to like in Eternals, Marvel Studios has found itself in an unfamiliar position following the lifting of the review embargo for the cosmic superhero adventure with critics decidedly mixed on the Chloe Zhao-directed movie – so much so that it’s currently sitting on the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.

At the time of writing, Eternals is sitting on 62% from 107 reviews, some 4% lower than 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, which previously held the title as the MCU’s worst reviewed movie. 62% is still enough to warrant a ‘Fresh’ rating, but the movie is hovering close to the 60% cut-off which would see it slip into uncharted territory for Marvel Studios: A dreaded Rotten rating.

Eternals begins its international roll out next week, arriving in the UK and North America on Friday, and so we’ll soon be able to get an indication of whether RT’s audience score is going to reflect that of critics, and whether fans will come to consider this new chapter of the MCU as amongst its weakest entries.

“”Marvel Studios’ Eternals features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, The Deviants.”

Eternals is directed by Chloe Zhao (The Rider) and features a cast that includes Angelina Jolie (Maleficent) as Thena, Richard Madden (Bodyguard) as Ikaris, Don Lee (Train to Busan) as Gilgamesh, Salma Hayek (The Hitman’s Bodyguard) as Ajak, Lauren Ridloff (The Walking Dead) as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry (Child’s Play) as Phastos, Lia McHugh (American Woman) as Sprite, Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) as Kingo, Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) as Dane Whitman, Gemma Chan (Captain Marvel) as Sersi and Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) as Druig.

Marvel’s Eternals is set for release on November 5th 2021.
