Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender begins production with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Lim Kay Siu and Ken Leung joining cast

November 17, 2021 by Ricky Church

Netflix has announced that its live-action adaptation of the hit animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender has begun production. As cameras begin rolling, the cast has been rounded out with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Kim’s Convenience), Lim Kay Siu (Nightwatch) and Ken Leung (Lost) joining the series.

Lee will portray Iroh, uncle to Prince Zuko and brother to Fire Lord Ozai, played by Dallas Liu and Daniel Dae Kim respectively. Iroh is a “retired Fire Nation general and the wise and nurturing mentor to his hot-headed nephew, Prince Zuko.”He is a fan-favourite and beloved character of the original series who was voiced by Mako for two of the series’ three season before passing away.

Siu will play Gyatso, an Air Monk who is “Aang’s guardian, father figure, and best friend” while Leung is Commander Zhao, “a scheming and ambitious Fire Nation military officer who’s eager to leverage an unexpected encounter with a desperate Prince Zuko to advance his personal goals.”

The trio join Jordon Cormier (Aang), Kiawentiio (Katara), Ian Ousley (Sokka), Liu and Kim. Production is taking place in Vancouver in a newly built studio for its virtual shoot.

“We’re thrilled to start production on this incredible project and we’re especially excited to work with the technology-benders at PXO to create the wondrous world of ATLA using the most advanced techniques available to filmmakers anywhere in the world,” said showrunner Albert Kim.

Kim serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer on the series. Michael Goi, Roseanne Liang, Jabbar Raisani and Jet Wilkinson are directing.
