Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic was never written, storylines could factor into The Mandalorian

November 28, 2021 by Gary Collinson

During last year’s Disney Investor Day, it was announced that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni would be expanding the world of The Mandalorian with two spinoff series in Star Wars: Ahsoka and Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic.

Although details on Rangers of the New Republic were kept tightly under wraps, the series was expected to focus on Gina Carano’s former Rebel soldier Cara Dune. And so, with Disney’s firing of the actress over “abhorrent” social media posts, it came as little surprise to hear earlier this year that the spinoff was no longer part of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars slate – something which studio head Kathleen Kennedy has now confirmed to Empire.

“We’d never written any scripts or anything on that,” said Kennedy when asked about the status of Rangers of the New Republic. “Some of that will figure into future episodes, I’m sure, of Mandalorian.”

When the projects were first announced, it was said that Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic would build to “a climactic story event”, tying together all of the shows similar to Netflix and Marvel’s The Defenders. Presumably this overarching plan still remains in place, and it sounds like it won’t be impacted too much by the absence of Cara Dune and Rangers of the New Republic.
