Netflix’s Marvel shows are being removed as rights revert to Disney

February 12, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Although we’ve seen Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk making their Marvel Studios debuts in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye respectively, it’s not yet been established whether these are the same characters from Netflix’s Daredevil show, or ‘variants’ of their old Marvel Television counterparts.

However, we may not have to wait much longer for clarification on that matter, as Netflix’s license for the Marvel Television-produced Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher, Iron Fist and The Defenders is expiring this month, with the shows set to be removed from the streaming service on March 1st as the rights revert to Disney and Marvel Studios. Additional reports are also suggesting that Netflix’s deal for the U.S. streaming rights to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is also up, and the ABC series will itself be removed on February 28th.

At this point, it’s unclear exactly what Disney plans to do with the shows after regaining the rights. Presumably Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will make its way to Disney+, where it’s already available in international markets including the UK, but it remains to be seen whether The Defenders shows will follow suit, given their content is a little more mature than standard MCU/Disney+ fare. One likely possibility is for the shows to join the adult animated series M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey on Hulu in the U.S., and the Star on Disney+ platform across the rest of the world.

One thing that is certain however is that any Netflix subscribers who want to watch the shows had better get bingeing…
