Queen Latifah’s The Equalizer renewed for third and fourth seasons

May 6, 2022 by Ricky Church

CBS has handed a two-season renewal to its reboot of The Equalizer starring Queen Latifah, which will take it through to season four.

In The Equalizer, Latifah stars as Robyn McCall, a former CIA operative who puts her vast array of skills up for hire as a vigilante to help ordinary men and women obtain justice. The series also stars Lorraine Toussaint, Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg, Liza Lapira and Laya DeLeon Hayes with Andrew W. Marlowe and Terri Edda Miller creating the reboot of the 1980s series.

A factor into the two-season renewal is the show’s impressive performance on Sunday nights for CBS, becoming the #1 scripted show for audiences on Sundays that has garnered nearly 10 million viewers per episode. The renewals will take The Equalizer into 2024 after the second season is set to conclude in two weeks. Marlowe and Miller served as showrunners for the first two seasons and CBS has hired Joseph C. Wilson and Adam Glass as the new showrunners going forward.

“The Equalizer continues to pack a powerful punch on Sunday nights, and we’re thrilled to have it back for two more seasons,” said Thom Sherman, CBS’ Senior Executive Vice President of Programming. “The success ofThe Equalizer is due to the sum of its parts – an outstanding cast led by the superb Queen Latifah, plus the exceptional creative team that has continued to evolve their storytelling with a compelling mix of everyday justice, family dynamics and real-world issues that connect and resonate with audiences.”

Queen Latifah also commented on the renewal in an interview for CBS Mornings, saying Robyn McCall is a character who “wanted to use her skills for the every man, if you will, or every woman” and said part of The Equalizers appeal has been its ability to “take topics that were ripped from the headlines and really deal with them.”

The Equalizer franchise has had good news for its television and theatrical fronts as just a couple weeks ago Denzel Washington announced he will start production on a third Equalizer film later this Fall, reprising his role of Robert McCall for the sequel with returning director Antione Fuqua.
