Sony Pictures celebrated Ghostbusters Day by announcing not one, but two brand new movies in the Ghostbusters franchise. The first will be a direct sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, while the second will see Sony Animation team with Netflix for an animated feature film.
Announced at Ghostbusters Ecto-Fest, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife follow-up is expected to bring back the main players from that torch-passing sequel and move the bustin’ back to the spirit infested streets of Manhattan.
Director Jason Reitman confirmed that the working title for the film is Firehouse, referring to the iconic Ghostbusters HQ, and that the action would pick up with the Spengler family returning to New York.

Reitman also confirmed that he was once again collaborating with Gil Kenan (Monster House) on the script for the sequel.

That wasn’t the only Ghostbusters movie news to be released from Sony’s containment unit though, because it was also revealed that Sony Animation is teaming up with Netflix to create the next generation of Ghostbusters, with an animated feature that will navigate an unexplored era of the Ghostbusters canon. The film will be directed by Jennifer Kluska (Hotel Transylvania: Transformania) and Chris Prynoski (Metalocalypse), from a script by Branda Hsueh.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars Carrie Coon (The Leftovers), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel), Paul Rudd (Avengers: Endgame), alongside returning Ghostbusters cast members Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz), Bill Murray (Peter Venkman), Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore), Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett), and Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz). It grossed an impressive $130M at the domestic box-office, but only managed a further $68 million overseas.
