Pixar announces plans for Inside Out sequel with Amy Poehler returning

September 10, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Arguably their last great film, Pixar have today confirmed that they plan to make a sequel to their animated classic Inside Out.

Inside Out‘s director Pete Docter and the voice of Joy Amy Poehler were in attendance at Disney’s D23 Expo to make the announcement.

Set for release in summer 2024, they revealed that Kelsey Mann (The Good Dinosaur) will take over the directing duties from Docter, with Meg LeFauve returning as screenwriter.

Poehler said that the Inside Out sequel will “take place inside Riley’s head, only this time she’s a teenager,” meaning that she has a whole set of new emotions to deal with. What these new characters are is yet to be unveiled, but they won’t include Fear or Disgust, as it was confirmed that Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling will not be reprising their roles as those respective emotions.

2016’s Best Animated Feature winner, Inside Out grossed $859M worldwide and told the story of 11-year old Riley, a happy-go-lucky girl whose world is turned upside down when she has to move away from her childhood home. Riley’s emotions – led by Joy (Amy Poehler) – then try to guide her through this difficult, life-changing event.
