Universal hoping to bring back Helen Hunt for Twister sequel

October 18, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are looking to cook up a storm as big as 1996’s $494 million grossing Twister by chasing down a director and luring back Helen Hunt for a follow-up.

Deadline reports that the sequel would be called Twisters, and that Amblin’s Steven Spielberg has approved a script by The Revenant‘s Mark L. Smith, and it’s his passion for the project that’s carrying the film to a potential Spring 2023 shoot.

Universal and Warner Bros are co-financing Twisters, which was originally set to be helmed by Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joseph Kosinski, before he departed to take the wheel on Brad Pitt’s Formula One movie for Apple. Names caught in the wind are Free Solo directors Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi, Cloverfield and Prey helmer Dan Trachtenberg, and Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight.

Sources also reveal that the filmmakers want to bring back original storm-chaser Helen Hunt, and tell a story which focuses on the daughter she had with the character played by the late Bill Paxton, who has inherited the same wind-related issues as her parents.
