Hugh Jackman on his Wolverine return in Deadpool 3

October 30, 2022 by EJ Moreno

For many fans, Hugh Jackman’s return to the role of Wolverine is a true delight.

The actor was announced as returning for Deadpool 3, the first entry under its new home at Marvel Studios. The announcement came with a clever video featuring Jackman and Ryan Reynolds pitching the return.

Hugh Jackman spoke to Variety about leaving Wolverine behind and how comfortable he was with that until he saw the original Deadpool in 2016. “I was 20 minutes in, and I was like, ‘Ah, damn it!’ All I kept seeing in my head was 48 Hours with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy,” says Jackman. “So it’s been brewing for a long time. It just took me longer to get here.”

It wasn’t until a family trip this year that Jackman finally decided it was time and called up Reynolds. Jackman says, “I think, actually, [Ryan had] given up. I think it was a big shock to him. There was a massive pause, and then he said, ‘I can’t believe the timing of this.'”

At that moment, Reynolds revealed to Jackman he was going to meet with Kevin Feige about Deadpool 3, and the addition of Jackman let the full vision for the project come together. Reynolds expresses his joy about returning, saying, “Oh my God, I’m thrilled. It’s like old home week. To get to be on set with one of my closest friends each and every day is a dream come true. But to do it with these two iconic characters side by side, that’s beyond our wildest dreams.”

Jackman suggests that the film will not be called Deadpool 3 , stating “Well, not in my heart. I’m pretty sure Wolverine wouldn’t like that title.”

Deadpool 3 will star Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin are writing the film, and Shawn Levy (Free Guy) is on board as director.

The as-yet-untitled Deadpool 3 is set for release on September 6th, 2024.
