Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean film is dead in the water

November 14, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

With Babylon and Barbie wrapped, Margot Robbie is busy lining up more projects to produce and star in, and while she’s still actively developing her Ocean’s Eleven prequel, another of her proposed franchise rejuvenations in the form of a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot is dead in the water at Disney.

Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed a while back that Disney were working on two potential scripts, one with Margot Robbie, and one without, and it appears that they’ve decided to set sail on the latter.

While speaking to Vanity Fair about everything from her breakout role in Neighbours, to the blockbuster razzmatazz of Damien Chazelle’s forthcoming Hollywood period epic Babylon, Robbie revealed that her high seas voyage was over, saying: “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they [Disney] don’t want to do it.”

The idea in question was rumoured to reunite Robbie with her Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson, while the other script mentioned by Bruckheimer is believed to be a reboot of the original series, which will see previous Pirates writer Ted Elliott team with up with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin.

How disappointed are you that we won’t be getting to see Robbie downing grog and hoisting the mainsail (if that’s even a thing)? Let us know what you think of this news by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
