Ben Affleck on the possibility of directing a Batman solo movie

January 19, 2016 by Gary Collinson

From the moment that Ben Affleck was announced as portraying The Dark Knight in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, various sites have been reporting that the star will direct a solo Batman movie (or even a trilogy of solo Batman movies, in one case).

Despite the fact that Warner Bros. has announced its DC Extended Universe slate through to 2020, we’ve still had no official word that Affleck has signed on for a Batman film, so USA Today put the question to the man himself:

“I’ll just say going through the process, I would never have imagined that I could or would direct a movie like this,” replied Affleck. “And in working with (Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder) and seeing what he did and watching him every day, I got really inspired by that and by seeing the scope on which he was telling the story, by seeing what he was able to do with this kind of mythic story on a grand scale.”

Considering Warner Bros. has absolutely no reason not to withhold the announcement if a Ben Affleck-directed Batman movie is already a done deal, it seems likely those earlier rumours were simply speculative efforts at scoop-guessing. However, judging from Affleck’s comments, he’ll certainly be interested if an offer is put on the table.

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set for release on March 25th 2016 and sees Zack Snyder directing a cast that includes returning Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), Harry Lennix (General Swanwick) and Christina Wren (Carrie Farris) alongside Ben Affleck (Argo) as Batman, Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jesse Eisenberg (Now You See Me) as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons (The Borgias) as Alfred Pennyworth and Jena Malone (Sucker Punch), Holly Hunter (The Piano), Tao Okamoto (The Wolverine) as Mercy Graves and Callan Mulvey (300: Rise of an Empire) and Scoot McNairy (Argo).
