Netflix’s Wednesday tops Stranger Things with new viewership record

December 2, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Originally published December 2, 2022. Updated December 3, 2022.

From TikTok to Twitter, you can’t escape the madness of Wednesday. The Netflix series is becoming a phenomenon for the streamer, and the viewership numbers are backing it up.

Wednesday debuted with an out-of-this-world 341.2 million hours viewed in its first week, coming in at #1 on the global Netflix Top 10 for that week. The eight-episode first season also reached the top spot in 83 countries.

The previous record-holder was the pop culture juggernaut Stranger Things, which saw 335.01 million hours of viewing in its debut week. This makes the Jenny Ortega-led series the most viewed hours of a Netflix debut for an English-Language TV series. It still doesn’t come near the powerhouse Squid Game, which holds the overall record at 571.76 million hours viewed in its biggest single week.

Tim Burton’s take on The Addams Family changed the formula and focused on the fan-favorite Wednesday Addams. This change led a new generation to fall in love with the spooky and kooky characters. Wednesday is becoming quite popular with Gen Z as well, with the Wednesday dance scene becoming a viral hit on TikTok.

Fans can’t get enough of Wednesday, and it’s only a matter of time before Netflix has another Addams Family reunion.

The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.

Wednesday stars Jenna Ortega as Wednesday, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley, and Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester alongside a cast that also includes Gwendoline Christie, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Joy Sunday, Emma Myers, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Georgie Farmer, Naomi Ogawa, and Moosa Mostafa.

Wednesday is streaming now on Netflix.
