Exclusive: Scream star Melissa Barrera says “It would be my dream for Sam to be Ghostface”

April 22, 2023 by Robert Kojder

With Benjamin Millipied’s hypnotic and gritty abstract dance drama Shakespearean star-crossed love story Carmen now in US theaters, star Melissa Barrera has been making the virtual junket press rounds. She was also open to fielding questions on the Scream series, where she was very receptive to a possible route I suggested the movies could go.

I closed the interview by tossing in a Scream question, mentioning, “While watching Scream VI, I couldn’t help thinking, I wonder if she wants to do a movie where she gets to let loose and be the Ghostface killer. So is that one possible direction you hope the movies go? Embracing the killer within?”

Without hesitation, Melissa remarked, “I would love that. It would be my dream for Sam to be Ghostface. And I think many people think that’s where it will go, which is why I sadly think it won’t happen. But I’m hoping that if we get to do a seventhth, it will be as exciting as VI“.

As Melissa stated, there is currently not another Scream film announced as of yet, but given the box office receipts and unfinished narratives, it’s difficult to imagine that there won’t be one on the horizon. However, it was recently revealed that she would be reteaming with Scream legacy sequel directors Radio Silence for a Universal monster picture, so stay tuned for further updates on that and Scream reports.

Scream VI is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Oplin and Tyler Gillett and stars Scream 2022 cast members Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding, franchise mainstay Courteney Cox and Scream 4’s Hayden Panettiere, and new additions Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Dermot Mulroney (Hanna), Jack Champion (Avatar: The Way of Water), Liana Liberato (The Beach House), Devyn Nekoda (Ghostwriter), Josh Segarra (Arrow), Henry Czerny (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1) and Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: No Way Home).
