Did James Gunn “accidentally” confirm Krypto The Superdog in Superman: Legacy?

May 9, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Will we see the live-action feature film debut of Krypto? It looks like James Gunn could’ve confirmed it in a recent interview.

Speaking to The Toronto Sun, Gunn sat down with the star of his recent film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Chris Pratt, for a farewell conversation concerning their work at Marvel.

The chat became truly newsworthy when Gunn talked about continuing their work together, adding he could find a spot for him in Superman: Legacy. Gunn opens the exchange with, “I was hoping I could cast you as Krypto the Superdog. You could do motion capture on set and walk around on your hands and knees, but you can’t talk.”

Pratt replies, “I’ll do Krypto, but you have to pay me in crypto.” Leading to Gunn quipping, “I’ll pay you in crypto, which amounts to zero dollars.”

The exchange turned a bit buzzier when Pratt declared, “It sounds like there’s going to be a character called Krypto in Superman – breaking news.” This is where Toronto Sun’s Mark Daniell notes, “That’s a scoop for me.” Gunn says, “It is a scoop, I guess.”

While the conversation between the two long-time collaborators could be quippy banter, fans went wild with the possibility of Krypto in a mainstream live-action film.

Including the polarizing character could also give a real preview of Superman: Legacy’s tone. Little is known about the project and its script, which Gunn reportedly turned in last week before the writer’s strike, but having Krypto there shows we could see something more akin to Gunn’s previous works. Not that Superman: Legacy will be anything like The Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but Gunn often puts CGI animals in his films and balances the absurdity with reality.

Krypto and Superman are a pair that some fans love, while others find a bit too much, so we shall see if Gunn could find that balance, if he even includes the character at all. We shall see who appears in Superman: Legacy when it debuts on July 11, 2025.

Gunn and Pratt are promoting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which just had a soft opening weekend at the box office, but has proven to be one of the most fan-favorite MCU outings in recent memory.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 brings the galactic gang back together one last time and sees the return of Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Sean Gunn (Kraglin), Sylvester Stallone (Stakar Ogord), Elizabeth Debecki (Ayesha), Michael Rosenbaum (Martinex), Will Poulter (Adam Warlock), Chukwudi Iwuji (The High Evolutionary), Maria Bakalova (Cosmo the Spacedog), Linda Cardellini (Lylla), Asim Chaudhry (Teefs the Walrus), Mikaela Hoover (Floor the Rabbit) and Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad) and Nico Santos (Crazy Rich Asians) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing.
