Coming off the back of helming a big-budget action-packed ensemble movie with Fast X, Louis Leterrier has revealed that he’d like to be the director to tackle an adaptation of Epic Games equally sprawling multiplayer game Fortnite.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and Now You See Me director was speaking at a San Diego Comic-Con panel when he told Haunted Mansion helmer Justin Simien that he would like to bring Fortnite to life “Because the game is incredible,” adding that “The characters… I mean, there’s so much more to be told. It’d be funny. It would be full of action and everything.”
Leterrier’s comments aren’t the first time the possibility of a Fortnite movie have been discussed, with reports emerging that Epic Games were preparing to branch out onto the big-screen doing the rounds in 2021.
The Fortnite brand is one tethered to the movies in many ways, with most of its playable skins taking the form of some of your favourite franchise IP, from Optimus Prime to Rey Skywalker, so-much-so that the Battle Royale island often feels like the ending of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One.
The popularity of the online game has also seen in-play movie tie-in events, such as the debut of the trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, while Avengers: Endgame directors The Russo Brothers were responsible for Season 6’s cinematic introduction.
As of 2023 Fortnite has more than 250 million average monthly players, while more than 25 million players use the game daily, and the average number of concurrent players on Fortnite is reported to be more than 9 million players.
