Jason Blum says Spawn reboot will “bring the Blumhouse edge” to superhero movies

October 24, 2023 by Ricky Church

The Spawn reboot coming from Blumhouse has been years in development with various factors slowing it down, the most current one being the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that have impacted the film industry for most of the year. Blumhouse founder Jason Blum gave a bit of an update to the film, which will star Jamie Foxx as the lead, and how it will be a darker take on the superhero genre.

At the New York Comic-Con last weekend, Blum stated Spawn will follow the comic’s dark tone while adding Blumhouse’s own feel and style to it. “Yes, I’m going to bring the Blumhouse edge [to the Spawn movie]. It’s going to be edgy and original as compared to other superhero movies. It’s gonna definitely feel like the Blumhouse version of a superhero movie.”

Spawn is being written by Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and Max Mixon (Yesterday Was Everything) off a draft Spawn creator Todd McFarlane wrote. McFarlane was going to direct the film himself for a while, but decided to vacate the director’s chair in the hopes of attracting a big name director.

While there is no production date yet, Blum did state earlier this year in an interview with ComicBook his hope they will have Spawn completed for a 2025 release date: “I would say you have a lot to hope for because it’s in very very active development,” he said at the time. “What needs to happen is that my fellow friends, the writers, and the studios need to figure out their differences and get back to writing, but we’ve got a great group of folks putting it together, and my hope is that that movie – my prediction is maybe we’ll actually see a Spawn movie in ’25. No promises, but that’s my prediction.”
