Five Nights at Freddy’s smashes Halloween and video game movie records with monstrous opening weekend

October 29, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Five Nights at Freddy’s survived the critical slashing it got and scared up an impressive opening weekend and some rave reviews from fans.

Many expected Universal and Blumhouse’s PG-13 horror film to do great business on the Halloween weekend. Still, no one could’ve predicted the film to bring in a record-smashing $78 million this weekend domestically. Including the international box office of $52 million, we saw Five Nights at Freddy’s take home a $130 million worldwide start.

With the box office numbers, we saw the video game adaptation become the biggest opening ever for Blumhouse Productions and the biggest horror opening weekend ever in multiple international markets. It’s the highest-grossing opening weekend for Halloween weekend release, as well as the second-largest debut of all time for a video game adaptation, only behind this year’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Globally, Five Nights at Freddy’s is the biggest horror opening of 2023, ahead of The Nun II and the highest-grossing Blumhouse global opening of all time.

Many thought the film debuting on Peacock the same day as its theatrical launch would’ve hurt business, much like people blamed for the last two Halloween films, but Five Nights at Freddy’s has cleared those quickly. In just three days of release, the film has already surpassed the entire global haul of Halloween Ends and will easily overtake 2021’s Halloween Kills early in the week. Speaking of streaming, Five Nights at Freddy’s has been the most-watched and biggest subscription driver on Peacock since it dropped.

Can the film survive past the spooky weekend and after the diehard fans saw it when it opened? Only time will tell, but it seems like Blumhouse is already happy with this success.

The movie follows a troubled security guard as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.

Five Nights At Freddy’s stars Josh Hutcherson, Matthew Lillard, Piper Rubio, Elizabeth Lail, Mary Stuart Masterson, Lucas Grant, Kat Conner Sterling and Jessica Blackmore.
