Jacob Elordi rejected audition for Superman: Legacy: “That was immediately, ‘No, thank you'”

November 14, 2023 by Ricky Church

Guardians of the Galaxy director and new DC Studios head James Gunn is getting ready to bring the Man of Steel back to the big screen in Superman: Legacy, for which he has already cast David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane. But one actor who had been reported to be in the running to play Superman has spoken out against his alleged involvement in this and other films of the superhero genre.

Euphoria star Jacob Elordi is currently making waves for his portrayal as Elvis Presley opposite Cailee Spaeny in the biopic Priscilla [read our review here], which follows the romance between the young Priscilla Wagner and the older Elvis Presley and their marriage, including the often turbulent years of Elvis’ demanding schedule and addictions and how they affected Priscilla.

In an interview with GQ, Elordi was asked about his audition for Superman: Legacy but revealed he had never actually auditioned and instead immediately turned down the opportunity. “They asked me to read for Superman,” he told the magazine. “That was immediately, ‘No, thank you.’ That’s too much. That’s too dark for me.”

Elordi elaborated further by saying it wasn’t just Superman: Legacy, but the superhero genre as a whole that does not appeal to him. “Not particularly, no,” Elordi said when asked if he’d consider any other superhero role. “I’ve always been told to say a rounded answer or my agent will get mad at me. ‘Anything can happen!’ And obviously anything can happen, but at this stage in my life, I don’t see myself having any interest in that. I like to make what I would watch, and I get very restless watching those movies.”

The official synopsis for Superman: Legacy states the film “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy will also star Isabela Merced (Instant Family) as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind) as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion (Castle) as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner and Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho.

Superman: Legacy will release on July 11th 2025.
