The Boys universe expands as Amazon orders The Boys: Mexico spin-off

November 29, 2023 by Ricky Church

The Boys universe is about to grow even more. Amazon has announced an additional spin-off to the franchise with The Boys: Mexico from Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer with Diego Luna (Andor) and Gael García Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle) executive producing and possibly starring in the series, per Deadline.

The plot for The Boys: Mexico is unknown as Dunnet-Alcocer has begun writing the pilot script. He will executive produce alongside Luna and Bernal, whose roles are said would not be major. Amazon has begun searching for a team that will help write and executive produce the series, including a co-showrunner alongside Dunnet-Alcocer.

The Boys is based on the New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. It focuses on superheroes who abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. Intent on stopping the corrupt superheroes, The Boys, a group of vigilantes, continue their heroic quest to expose the truth about The Seven and Vought—the multibillion-dollar conglomerate that manages the superheroes and covers up their dirty secrets. It’s the seemingly powerless against the super-powerful.

The Boys has run on Amazon for three seasons and has a fourth in production. Its popularity has grown to become one of Amazon Prime’s most-watched series and has seen two spin-offs in the franchise: the animated anthology The Boys Presents: Diabolical and the live-action Gen V, which concluded its first season earlier this month and has already been renewed for a second season.

Gen V takes place in the prestigious superhero-only college Godolkin University and focuses on a group of young superheroes-in-training as they compete to become the next member of The Seven. It features a cast that includes Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Shelley Conn, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sean Patrick Thomas, Marco Pigossi, Clancy Brown and Jason Ritter, as well as appearances from Jessie T. Usher, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and P.J. Byrne reprising their roles from The Boys.
