Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is officially starting its production with Shadow the Hedgehog front and center.
Plans for a third Sonic the Hedgehog film were first announced before the release of the second time at a 2022 ViacomCBS investor event. The third film was ready to go after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 racked up $405.4 million worldwide.
Filming on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 began in September 2023 in London, England, but the SAG-AFTR strikes halted production with the actual cast.
In a first-look image, we get a new glimpse at the model used for Shadow. The fan-favorite character’s first appearance began in 2001 in Sonic Adventure 2 before appearing in Sonic Heroes and eventually getting his own spin-off game. Shadow did briefly appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as a post-credit teaser.

The returning cast includes James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, and Idris Elba. Casting for Shadow has yet to be confirmed.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 hits cinemas on December 20th, 2024.
