Teaser trailer for new horror short film Breakfast

December 4, 2023 by Shaun Munro

Since my teenage years – long before I became a film critic or regular contributor to Flickering Myth – I’ve had a fascination with the filmmaking process, and a deep desire to create my own projects.

But between the financial and logistical hurdles of production and, honestly, being a serial procrastinator who loathes anything resembling hard work, it’s just never happened.

But the revolution of affordable mirrorless cameras in recent years has made my pipe dream feel a little less illusory, and so after saving up for a Panasonic GH5S and some accompanying lenses, I decided to put together my first short film project, Breakfast.

Breakfast is a short horror film about a man whose seemingly regular morning routine is interrupted by the presence of an invisible malevolent entity, which attacks him while he attempts to do the most basic of things – make his damn breakfast.

The short is a labour-of-love shot in my own home for virtually no money – beyond the camera equipment I already own, of course. It was also largely self-produced, save for my wife helping film shots I physically couldn’t alone, and hiring a composer to handle the score.

I wore almost every hat on this production, which was both challenging and rewarding, and taught me a hell of a lot about the entire process of filmmaking, even if only on a small scale.

In the spirit of restrictions I decided to minimise plot and dialogue in favour of action, suspense, dark humour, and ominous vibes.

After spending the last few months of my free time deep in post-production, today I premiere the teaser trailer for my short, which (hopefully) emphasises the dark(ly funny?) mood of the piece as I enter the polishing stages of post.

I don’t have a firm release date for the short film yet, though I fully expect it to premiere on streaming platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo within the first few months of 2024.

Finally I’d like to thank our editor-in-chief Gary Collinson for generously providing me with this platform to share and promote my work. Without any further ado, check out the trailer below:
