Superman: Legacy director James Gunn is against “cameo porn” in his DC Universe

December 15, 2023 by EJ Moreno

James Gunn, fresh off casting a handful of supporting players for Superman: Legacy, is saying he doesn’t want any ‘cameo porn’ in DC Studios.

The outspoken DC Studios co-chair and Superman: Legacy director recently spoke on Threads about not wanting meaningless cameos in his future DC projects.

He stresses that roles like Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillon), and Hawkgirl (Isabela Mercad) are all in service of building a stacked universe.

Gunn vented on social media, stating: “I call that ‘Cameo Porn,’ and it has been one of the worst elements of recent superhero films. If a character is in film, they have to have a reason to be there story-wise. I don’t mind actual cameos – if it’s a glimpse or a moment, an Easter egg. What bothers me is when they mangle an elegant story by shoehorning characters in – they aren’t there because the story calls for it but for some other reason.”

Recently, it was teased that Sean Gunn would appear in Superman: Legacy in totally not a cameo, before appearing in later DC Studios projects.

The official synopsis for Superman: Legacy states that the film “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
