Warner killed Superman & Lois to make room for James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy

February 19, 2024 by EJ Moreno

For years, DC was happy with multiple versions of their iconic heroes filling the television and film spaces. We had multiple versions of The Flash, a handful of Batman projects, and, of course, Superman & Lois began during a rocky time for Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel era.

This mindset isn’t the way of the DC Studios’ future, though. In a new report from The Wrap centering on The CW and its business, the conversation shifted to the recently cancelled CW series Superman & Lois. CW’s President of Entertainment, Brad Schwartz, tells the publication that even though they had a hit series, the decision came down from the higher-ups at Warner Bros. Discovery.

Schwartz notes, “They don’t want a competing Superman product in the marketplace.” This refers to the currently in-production James Gunn film Superman: Legacy, which is being viewed as a relaunch for the DC brand.

Of the final season of Superman & Louis,  Schwartz praises the series: “I watched the first episode last night. It will make you cry.”

James Gunn relaunches DC with Superman: Legacy in July 2025, while oddly enough he has also recently confirmed that J.J. Abrams’ planned Superman movie reboot remains in the works as part of DC Studios’ Elseworlds slate.

“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer.
