Anthony Hopkins to star in The Island Of Dr. Moreau reimagining Eyes In The Trees

March 7, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Academy Award winning legend Anthony Hopkins is set to star in Eyes in the Trees, a reimagining of the classic H.G. Wells novel The Island of Dr. Moreau.

Per Deadline’s report, Eyes in the Trees will be directed by Timothy Woodward Jr. (The Call), and star the Silence of the Lambs and The Father actor as a geneticist who has been isolated after the government stopped funding his research following the violent outbreak of one of his test subjects. Later, two renowned filmmakers and their crew embark on a journey of discovery, only to find their excursion turned into a fight for survival for not just themselves, but the entire human race.

First published in 1896, The Island of Dr. Moreau has found its way to the big-screen in various guises over the years; from 1932’s Island of Lost Souls, through to 1977’s Burt Lancaster-led The Island of Dr. Moreau. However, it’s John Frankenheimer’s 1996 monstrosity for Dr. Moreau is most famous.

Starring Marlon Brando, Val Kilmer, David Thewlis, and Fairuza Balk, The Island of Dr. Moreau‘s hellish shoot is the stuff of legend. Original director Richard Stanley (Dust Devil) jumped ship/was fired due to Kilmer and Brando’s on-set behaviour, and that was only on the days that they bothered to show up at all, while the budget spiralled out of control and the on-location weather was described as hellish. Released to critical derision and multiple Razzie Award wins, the $40 million (and the rest) budgeted film went on to gross $49 million worldwide.

This reimagining of Moreau has been written by B. Harrison Smith (The Special) and Mike Manning (Son of the South).
