Nintendo and Illumination announce new Super Mario Bros. Movie

March 11, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Nintendo and Illumination have teamed up to deliver the rather unsurprising news that they are officially starting work on a brand new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri made the announcement in a video (which you can check out below) to celebrate Mario Day, in which they revealed that the film will arrive in cinemas on April 3, 2026.

Details were scarce, but Meledandri did say that Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!) will return to direct, once again working from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel, with Miyamoto adding that they were “broadening Mario’s world further”.

The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed $1.36 billion at the worldwide box-office, and told the origin story of Mario (Chris Pratt) and his younger brother Luigi (Charlie Day), two Brooklyn plumbers who are whisked away to the Mushroom Kingdom. The smash-hit animation also featured Jack Black, Seth Rogen and Anya Taylor-Joy.
